/r/movies has a Discord server now!

With the generous assistance of /u/RAWOCTOPUS, a Discord server for /r/movies has been set up! I know that some of you have approached us in modmail in the past about this sort of thing but the logistics of creating/managing a chatroom for the over 12 million subscribers of /r/movies has been daunting. Anyway RAWOCTOPUS reached out to us mods and we decided to take him up on his offer given his experience creating and managing large Discord servers for other subreddits, namely /r/hiphopheads.

For those who don't know what Discord is, it was originally a gaming application which turned into more of a virtual gathering place. It's similar to Skype, but more lightweight. It's a great place for people to get together and meet up and talk about stuff. It's basically a (much better version) of IRC. If you have used the platform Slack for collaboration, Discord is very similar to it.

My personal hope is that this Discord server becomes a cool place to chat and hang out and have more discussions about movies that go beyond the usual reddit thread. I use Slack and Discord for some other subreddits that I am active in, and it has been a great tool to work collaboratively and get to know other redditors.

To join us on the /r/movies Discord server, please follow this link and (if you haven't already) sign up for an account. You can use an existing email that you own or a temporary one – either way, other Discord users will not be able to view your email address. If you're choosing a new username, please use a username that's at least similar to (if not exactly the same as) your reddit username 🙂

See you on Discord! 😀
