January isn’t the strongest month at the box office, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a few big releases to help you get through those long winter nights. This year, thriller fans will have the films “Serenity,” “Escape Room,” and “Glass” to look forward to, while families can hit the theaters for “The Kid That Would be King” and “A Dog’s Way Home.” January has hosted a few blockbusters over the years, the highest opening weekend for a January release was “American Sniper” in 2015 with $89M, followed by “Ride Along” in 2014 with $41M. Those are the openings that this new batch of movies will be hoping to top, with “Glass” the most likely film to have a chance to rule the box office.

These are the big movies to watch for this January,

Sony Pictures is starting off the month with “Escape Room” on January 4th. This weekend is typically slow at the box office, and Sony Pictures won’t have to compete with any other nationwide releases. The film comes from director Adam Robitel (Insidious: The Last Key) and stars Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil) and Tyler Labine (New Amsterdam).

Sony Pictures describes the film stating, ” Escape Room is a psychological thriller about six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and must use their wits to find the clues or die.”

The following weekend Sony Pictures is releasing Charles Martin Smith’s “A Dog’s Way Home,” starring Ashley Judd and Edward James Olmos. The family adventure should be a welcome treat for parents, the previous family-friendly release was “Mary Poppins Returns” back on December 19th.

The studio describes the film adding, ” A Dog’s Way Home chronicles the heartwarming adventure of Bella, a dog who embarks on an epic 400-mile journey home after she is separated from her beloved human.”

That’s the same weekend that “Replicas” is releasing in theaters nationwide. The film was directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff and stars Alice Eve, Keanu Reeves, and Emily Alyn Lind. “Replicas” also stars Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”) and John Ortiz (“Silver Linings Playbook”).

The official description reads, “After a car accident kills his family, a daring synthetic biologist (Reeves) will stop at nothing to bring them back, even if it means pitting himself against a government-controlled laboratory, a police task force, and the physical laws of science.”

Another film releasing that weekend is “The Upside,” a comedy from Neil Burger that stars Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, Julianna Margulies, Aja Naomi King, and Nicole Kidman.

The studio describes the comedy saying, “The Upside is director Neil Burger’s heartfelt comedy about a recently paroled ex-convict (Kevin Hart) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a paralyzed billionaire (Bryan Cranston).”

One of the biggest movies of the month is releasing on January 18th, that’s M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass.” The film is the third installment to a trilogy that began with “Unbreakable” in 2000, before being followed up with “Split” in 2016. The new installment was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan and stars Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, and Sarah Paulson.

Universal Pictures describes the film adding, “Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men. Joining the all-star cast are Unbreakable’s Spencer Treat Clark and Charlayne Woodard, who reprise their roles as Dunn’s son and Price’s mother, as well as Golden Globe Award winner Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story series).”

The following week on January 25th, FOX is adding another family adventure called “The Kid Who Would be King.” The film was directed by Joe Cornish, and features Rebecca Ferguson.

The official description reads, “Alex (Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he’s just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Ferguson). With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be.”

That is the same weekend that the thriller “Serenity” is scheduled to hit theaters. The film was written and directed by Steven Knight and stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou, and Diane Lane.

The studio describes the film adding, “From the creative mind of Oscar nominee Steven Knight comes a daringly original, sexy, stylized thriller. Baker Dill (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey) is a fishing boat captain leading tours off a tranquil, tropical enclave called Plymouth Island. His quiet life is shattered, however, when his ex-wife Karen (Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway) tracks him down with a desperate plea for help. She begs Dill to save her – and their young son – from her new, violent husband (Jason Clarke) by taking him out to sea on a fishing excursion, only to throw him to the sharks and leave him for dead. Karen’s appearance thrusts Dill back into a life he’d tried to forget, and as he struggles between right and wrong, his world is plunged into a new reality that may not be all that it seems.”

While it isn’t the best cinematic lineup you could hope for, there is something for everyone this year at the box office.
