He’s back, been a little minute but we are graced with legendary greatness! From Dirty Harry, to Gran Torino, which one will grace us? Hail I will take the quirky, funny, racist and quick witted old man CLINT EASTWOOD! You sir are a true legend. When I heard of this film, the first thing that came to mind was “wow look at this old badass, Clint Eastwood is still directing AND acting at 88 years old.” I will say that his recent films haven’t been that great but still very entertaining! He’s had some really memorable directorial works in the past but recent years haven’t stuck out to me. Going in, I didn’t expect much with The Mule, it seemed like the type of film we would see from Eastwood; a biographical film that doesn’t offer enough to its interesting story. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the movie and its his best since Gran Torino.
The Mule is based on the true story of Leo Sharp, an 80 something year old man running on “hard times” who becomes a mule for the Sinaloa Cartel. The thing here is that literally no one expects it for so long. Even the DEA are stumped on who the mule could be. Clint Eastwood plays the character of Earl Stone (based on Sharp), who decides to go on these escapades to make the money to not only better his own life but that of his estranged family, with whom he is trying to reconnect with. With the money coming quick and easy, The dangers of the job are ever present and Stone must comply or face harsh consequences.
From the trailers, I believed I was thinking that I wasn’t going to feel Eastwood portraying the role but then in his pure fashion his cooky casually racist old white guy role pulled through and its actually pretty funny. This film is just funny and entertaining. Its a good thing when Eastwood is able to bring a biopic that engages the audience and shows how interesting its subject matter really is. Its not overly amazing or anything but its a joy to watch Eastwood on his cross country journey with his nonchalant attitude and run in with the law, despite there being major consequences. Well deserved this movie gets a 4.0 the burgers here are made to delight and swell for the taking and a little Eastwood racism on the side!! For the story and entertainment value you must check this movie out! He’s continuing to knock them out in his later years! Come back to me THE MOVIE MAN and let me know your thoughts.
